Passion for Spanish wine

WINERIES

Agustí Torelló Mata is a distinguished family company dedicated to producing reserva and gran reserva cavas in the Penedès region. The basis for the company’s sparkling wines are the traditional indigenous grape varieties of the area (Macabeo from the coast, Xarel·lo from the central area and Parellada from the pre-coastal mountain range, together with the red Trepat and white Malvasia/Subirat Parent varieties), which are distributed throughout over 100 hectares of old vines on their property. The half million bottles produced annually are marked with the year of harvest and the date of disgorging as a guarantee of quality.

Established in 1950, it was only 29 years later that its most celebrated and sought-after cava was released onto the market: Kripta (€45, limited production in numbered bottles), which is a blend of Macabeo, Parellada and Xarel.lo from vines over 60 years old, aged for at least 48 months to give it complexity and balance. The bottled is inspired by classic Roman amphorae and features a design by sculptor and painter Rafael Bartolozzi.

The Agustí Torelló Mata brand was born in the 1990s and today makes up the majority of the winery’s production, which for the most part remains loyal to the traditional blend of Macabeo, Parellada and Xarel.lo. The range includes a Reserva (aged for at least 24 months, €10), two gran reservas that come in Brut and Brut Nature versions (€12–€14) and the Gran Reserva Barrica (€20), a single variety wine made from Macabeo vines over 30 years old, with 40% of the base wine fermented and aged for six months in French oak casks. The winery also produces a Trepat rosé (€12, aged for at least 18 months).

In addition, there are two wines sold for around €8 under the Bayanus name, which come in the 37.5 cl size: the first is a blend of classic varieties aged for at least 24 months; the second is a Trepat rosé aged for at least 18 months.

Agustí Torelló also markets three organic, single variety white wines from the DO Penedès as part of the “Colección Terrers”: XII Subirat Parent (€9), Xic Xarel.lo (€6) and the cask-fermented Aptià Macabeo (€10).

Other products of note are the brandy L’Esperit (€28), a cava vinegar (€11) and, in particular, Sòlid (€15), a cava that is solid thanks to the addition of xanthan gum, a thickening and gelling agent. This unique product is the result of a collaboration with Celler Can Roca and the Alícia Foundation and is used for culinary purposes.
