Celler Kripta

Celler Kripta is a well-known family-run estate in Penedès dedicated to producing extended ageing sparkling wines. Production centres on the classic local grape varieties, whites Macabeo Xarel·lo and Parellada, together with the red Trepat. The vineyards extend across more than 100 hectares, 40 of them family-owned.

Around half million bottles  are released each year. Every one carries both the vintage and the date of disgorgement -a practice Kripta pioneered in Catalonia. After  many years within DO Cava, Kripta joined the Corpinnat collective brand in July 2025.

The estate’s identity is inextricably linked to its founder, Agustí Torelló Mata, a pioneering winemaker of his time and the man who established the first laboratory for wine analysis in Sant Sadurní d'Anoia in 1953. He later received the inaugural medal for oenological merit from Spain’s Ministry of Agriculture in 1984, and the Catalan equivalent in 1993. He also served as president of the Cava Guild from its foundation in 1979 until 1993.

In 1979, he launched Kripta (€76 in Spain, around 30,000 numbered bottles), his flagship extended-ageing cava. Instantly recognisable in its amphora-shaped bottle with a label designed by sculptor and painter Rafael Bartolozzi, Kripta blends Macabeo, Parellada and Xarel.lo from vines over 60years old. Nine years’ ageing delivers complexity and balance.

In the 1990s, Agustí Torelló Mata became a brand in its own right with the expansion of the range. However, in 2024, all sparkling wines were consolidated under the Kripta brand, coinciding with the arrival of the third generation. The founder's signature remains clearly visible on the label of Singular (€52), a brut nature aged for seven years and available only in magnum.

Formerly sold as Reservas under the DO Cava, the mid-range tier includes Brut Franc (aged for at least 24 months, €13.50) and Trepat Brut Rosé (€16). Sparkling wines with an extended ageing period of five years include Brut Ubac (€18) and Barrica Brut Nature (€26), a single-varietal Macabeo whose base wine is fermented and aged in French oak barrels for six months before secondary fermentation in bottle. Brut Nature Icònic (€20) is aged for six years.

At entry level, the Bayanus label features a four-year-aged blend of the three local varieties, as well as a 375 ml bottle version with a shorter ageing process.

Alongside its sparkling portfolio, the winery produces a small collection of organic still wines under DO Penedès, aged briefly on their lees. These include Xic Xarel.lo and Xic Rosat, made from Trepat; Xarel.lo Vermell XV; and a Garnacha-based rosé simply labelled as Garnatxa.
