Wine tastings in February 2017

Wine events are starting to pick up a in February, with some interesting tastings specially in El Puerto de Santa María in Cádiz, where top producers from the Sherry Triangle, Castilla-León and Galicia, among other wine regions, will present their wines at Cuatro Gatos Wine Fest, and at restaurant La Cigaleña in Santander, where a bunch of lucky wine lovers will be able to taste old vintages of Bodegas R. López de Heredia.

1 February. Kike Ojanguren, gourmet cheese merchant, and Óscar Soneira, from the Hemoglovinum blog, present a cheese and Sherry wine tasting with bottles like Fino Arroyuelo (Primitivo Collantes), Manzanilla Maruja (Bodegas Piñero), Amontillado Callejuela and Cream muy viejo (Bodegas Piñero). 1 February. Rubén Parera (Bodega Finca Parera) will be today at Jovani & Vins (Comte Borrell, 30) in Barcelona presenting the wines he makes at his 20-hectare estate in Sant Llorenç d’Hortons in Alt Penedès. His vines are biodinamically and organically grown. Time: 19:45 Price: €6

2 February. Wine merchant Majuelos Singulares (San Ignacio, 9) in Valladolid holds a tasting of wines from several villages in the region of Cebreros, in northwestern Madrid. The line-up includes Groove 2015 (RuBor Viticultores) from Cebreros, K∏ Amphorae 2015 (Daniel Ramos) from El Tiemblo, Gaznata Finca Mariano 2013 (Don Juan del Águila) from El Barraco, 7 Navas Finca Catalino 2010 (Bodegas del Alto Alberche) from Navaluenga, La Forcípula 2015 (Raúl Calle) from Navarredondilla and Hoyando 2014 (Juan Luis Beltrán) from Hoyo de Pinares. Until 5 February. Over 400 restaurants, cocktail bars, cooking schools, gourmet shops, cultural centres, art galleries and museums in Madrid will take part in Gastrofestival 2017, an event aimed at promoting the city's gastronomy. There will be several opportunities to taste wine such as pinchos and Rioja wine in many bars across the city, Ribera del Duero wine tastings at La Vieja Castilla (Chueca), a dinner paired with Sherry wines in A Punto Librería (Chueca), a gastro and wine journey through the permanent collection of the Reina Sofía museum and a Rioja masterclass in Bodega Santa Cecilia (Chamberí).

5 February. Wine tasting school Vináliti in Málaga (Salinas, 3) organizes a winegrowing and winemaking workshop at Bodega La Capuchina. During the workshop, Susana y Emilio, owners of La Capuchina, will lend some rows of vines to participants so they can work them throughout a year and finish making their own wine. Each participant will carry out all the usual routines in the vineyard: winter pruning, removing tips and young leaves, thinning out, harvesting and winery jobs. The idea is that each participant makes a wine with the Denomination of Origin label to take home. Pruning is the first activity on the list. 7 February. El Mostrador de Vila Viniteca in Madrid (General Díaz Porlier, 45) organizes a tasting of Bierzo wines, an area with a sizable number of young producers making Atlantic, frangrant fruity style wines. The following wines will be poured at the tasting: Descendientes de J.Palacios Las Lamas 2006, Camino del Norte El Tesón 2012, Pittacum Aurea 2009, Mengoba Mencía de Espanillo 2013, Laderas de Leonila 2014, Dominio de Anza Finca El Rapolao 2014 and Niepoort Projecto Raúl Perez Calderera Branco 2013. 7 February. Wine merchant Tiza y Flor (César Elguezábal, 31) in Alicante has invited Beatriz Herranz (Barco del Corneta) to present Casio, Judas and Bruto, her trilogy of wines made from the old vineyards planted with Verdejo, Palomino and Viura. 8 February.  Sommelier Ferran Centelles, who has recently published a book called Qué vino con este pato presents, along with Outlook Wine school, a food and wine seminar where he will explain techniques, concepts and trends using theory and practical exercises. 9 February. Does terroir exist? At today’s tasting in Enoteca Barolo (Príncipe de Vergara, 211) in Madrid, Juanma Ruiz Casado will try to asnwer this question comparing wines sourced from various types of soils and with different aromas and flavours that are allegedly passed onto the wines. 9 February. Restaurant Los Cabezudos de Zaragoza (Antonio Agustín, 12-14) along with Enoteca Khantaros, organizes a dinner paired with Vega Sicilia wines. 10 February. Mature vintage specialist VinoVintage Santander presents a very special tasting at La Cigaleña in Santander (Daoiz y Velarde, 19). Led by Andrés Conde Laya, the tasting will include historic López de Heredia wines such as Viña Tondonia Plantación 1913-1914 Blanco, López de Heredia Cepa Médoc 4 Año, López de Heredia Viña Romania, Viña Laconia 6 Año (bottled in 1970) and the following Viña Tondonia Gran Reserva vintages: 1934, 1947, 1954, 1964 and 1970. 10 February. One of the Sherry Triangle's most dynamic and respected winemakers, Ramiro Ibáñez, will be visiting Essencia Wine Bar in San Sebastián (Zabaleta, 42) to present a tasting of the wines he makes under his brand Cota 45 and to share some of his extensive knowledge about soils, albariza and single vineyards in Sanlucar and Jerez. 11 February. Nine wineries in Lapuebla de Labarca (Rioja Alavesa) host Uztaberri Eguna, a festive day when producers open their wineries for tastings and guided tours to present their 2016 wines. Aside from this, there will be tastings of olives, oil and doughnuts plus an uncorking competition. Time: 11:00 Price: €6

13 February. Vintage wine bar in the Basque capital Vitoria (Ramiro de Maeztu, 5) presents a tasting of Greek wines led by Mª José García Soler, professor and expert in Ancient Greece gastronomy, who will talk about the origins of viticulture in the Mediterranean, the varieties grown nowadays and the country's producing regions. 15-16 February. Dignifying vignerons is the motto of the II Salón Viña Ibérica in Zaragoza, held within the bi-annual fair Enomaq. Around 20 producers from Navarra, Aragón, Cataluña and Valencia will be there to present their wines at this event, which is open to the public. 16 February. Wine merchant Bodega Santa Cecilia in Madrid (Blasco de Garay, 74) hosts José Manuel Pérez Ovejas, winemaker at Bodegas Pérez Pascuas, a classic producer from Ribera del Duero, who will present a tasting with the following wines: Viña Pedrosa Crianza 2014, Viña Pedrosa Reserva 2012, Viña Pedrosa Gran Reserva 2010 and Cepa Gavilán Crianza 2014. Wine store El Buen Gusto in Valladolid (Manuel Silvela, 2) has invited Benjamín Romeo, one of Rioja's most renowned wine producers, to talk about the wines he makes in San Vicente de la Sonsierra. 19 February. Vella Terra Natural Quality Food Fair celebrates its second edition in Barcelona with the presence of small winegrowers from Catalonia (Terroir al Limit, Clos Lentiscus, Celler Pardas, Cosmic Vinyaters, Celler Mas Candí, La Salada…), as well as a sizable representation from other Spanish regions buena (Roca Madre group, Las Moradas de San Martín, 4 Kilos), Italy (Emidio Pepe, La Stoppa, Croci, Azienda Agricola Montesissa Emilio,Cascina Degli Ulivi…) and France (Domaine Henri et Gilles Buisson, Domaine de Villeneuve, Les 9 Caves…). 22 February. Wine merchant Paco Berciano, owner of Alma Vinos Únicos and a great connoisseur of the wines from Burgundy, will lead a tasting at Umami Gijón (Av. 22 February. Californian writer Miquel Hudin, who is a contributor of SWL and knows the wines of Croatia well, presents in Monvínic in Barcelona (Diputació, 249) a tasting of wines from the Dalmatian Coast. 23 February. To celebrate its 75th anniversary in 2007, retailer Vila Viniteca commissioned 26 producers to make a limited edition of 1,000 bottles of a unique wine from that vintage. Today, almost 10 years later, a dinner will be held at Barcelona restaurant Vía Véneto (Ganduxer, 10) with the presence of some of those wines and their creators: Álvaro Palacios, Peter Sisseck, Dirk Van der Niepoort, Abel Mendoza and Maite Fernández and Jose María Fonseca. 23 February. José Carlos Román presents at the Unión Española de Catadores (Lope de Vega, 27) in Madrid tasting of Creams from Jerez and Montilla-Moriles, a style of wine that, despite its lack of glamour, is still one of the most consumed sherries in the world. 23 February. Taberna Palo Cortado in Madrid (Unión, 5) presents a tasting of wines from Bodegas Yuste in Sanlúcar de Barrameda with the following wines: Manzanilla Fina Señorita Irene, Manzanilla Aurora, Manzanilla La Kika, Amontillado Aurora, Amontillado Conde de Aldama, Palo Cortado Conde de Aldama and brandy Punto Azul Prestige. 24 February. Juancho Asenjo, one of the leading experts in Italian wines in Spain, presents a tasting of Barbaresco wines, an appellation in Piedmont neighbouring Barolo, where Nebbiolo is also used but offers wines with smooth tannins. The wines, sourced from Asenjo's own cellar,  are these: Barbaresco Serracapelli 2011 Cecilia Monte (Neive), Barbaresco Gallina 2012 Piero Busso (Neive), Barbaresco Rizzi 2012 Rizzi (Treiso), Barbaresco Vanotu 2010 Pelissero (Treiso), Barbaresco Gaiun 2011 Marchesi di Gresy (Barbaresco), Barbaresco Rabajà Riserva 2006 Cortese (Barbaresco) and Langhe Nebbiolo Sorì San Lorenzo 2008 Gaja (Barbaresco). 24-25 February. The Experiencia Verema in Valencia starts this year with an inaugural event led by Julio Sáenz, La Rioja Alta winemaker, where he will present a vertical tasting of Viña Ardanza with the following vintages: 1989, 1995, 2000, 2001, 2005 and 2008. Over that day and the next there will be tastings by Ramón Bilbao Group, expert Jordi Melendo on Champagne, a vertical tasting of Grans Muralles by Bodegas Torres, six Garnachas by Vintae and a closing tasting with “great wines from the Duero”. Over the two-day event, there will be over 90 producers with stands showing their wines.  Price: €10 (€5 early bird) Tastings: €60 (non members)

24-25 February. Over a dozen Rioja producers will present their new vintages during Haro's Wine Carnival which this year is inspired in medieval occupations and is held at the cloister of Hotel Los Agustinos (San Agustín, 2) in Haro. The  wineries that will have a stand to taste their wines are: Gómez Cruzado, Bilbaínas, CVNE, La Rioja Alta, Martínez Lacuesta, Muga, Carlos Serres, Florentino de Lecanda, Ibaiondo Ramón Bilbao, Roda Virgen de la Vega, Rioja Santiago and Marqués de Carrión. price: €25 on sale at Haro and Logroño's Tourism Office. 25 February. Cuatro Gatos Wine Fest is the name chosen by distributor Federico Ferrer to present the wines he sells on his Cuatro Gatos Wine Club website. It is a relaxed and fun event which this year will be held at the bullring in El Puerto de Santa María, in the heart of Sherry Country. Producers such as Germán R. Blanco (Quinta Milú, San Esteban and Casa Aurora), Xabier Sanz (Viña Zorzal), Beatriz Herranz (Barco del Corneta), Charlotte Allen (Almaroja), Xurxo Alba (Albamar), Miguel Montoto (Los Vinos de Miguel - Coto de Gomáriz, Viños de Encostas and Ailalá), Primitivo Collantes, Ramiro Ibáñez (Cota45), WIlly Pérez (Luis Pérez), Pepe Blanco (Viña La Callejuela), Eulogio Pomares (Zárate) and José Crusat (Entre os Ríos) and Verónica Ortega, among others, will be pouring and explaining their wines to wine lovers.
