Summer is already here and wine events tend to be more fun-oriented with festivals focusing on music and wine intertwined with other events. Winelovers working in July as well as those on holiday will have many opportunities to enjoy at least one of the activities taking place across the country this month. Remember to return to this page for updates - Spanish Wine Lover doesn’t go on holiday in July!

2 July. The terrace of producer Martín Codax in the Salnés Valley (Pontevedra) hosts a new edition of As Tardes do Atlántico, in which various national chefs present Galician products accompanied by wines from Martín Códax. The first Tarde do Atlántico, on 2 July, will be dedicated to Japanese-Galician cuisine made from local fish and will be prepared by the Abastos 2.0 restaurant in Santiago de Compostela. 3 July. Wine producer Jorge Monzón, who has worked in iconic estates such as Romanée-Conti or Vega Sicilia and now runs his own 35-hectare project in Ribera del Duero, will be at Vila Viniteca in Barcelona (Agullers, 7) today presenting the following wines: Pícaro del Águila Clarete 2014 (Magnum), Pícaro del Águila Clarete 2016, Pícaro del Águila 2017, Dominio del Águila Reserva 2015, Dominio del Águila Peñas Aladas Gran Reserva 2012, Dominio del Águila Peñas Aladas Gran Reserva 2013 and Dominio del Águila Canta la Perdiz 2015. 3 July. Pura Cepa restaurant in Murcia (Plaza Cristo del Rescate) presents its new project, called Pura Viña, with a  dinner and tasting with three of their wines on show: Ensayo, Primera Vendimia and Tío Santiago. Time: 21:30 Price: €30 

4 July. Verema presents in Barcelona (Hotel Palace, Salones Gran Vía and Dalí) the first edition of Italia TerraVini, a show in which it will be possible to taste wines from some 20  producers from different Italian regions. After the tasting there will be a dinner paired with more Italian wines in the restaurant Vivo Tapas (€35). Opening hours: 12:00-21:00 Lounge price: €5 online and €10 in the box office

4 July. As part of the Alella Summer Festival (Barcelona), producer Alta Alella hosts a concert with Eduard Costa who will present L’últim Indi, a new project that blends pop with ancestral sounds. The concert will be held at El Celler de les Aus, the cellar housing this producer’s natural wines. As well as the music, participants will be able to enjoy the food served at the foodtrucks in the estate plus the cavas and wines of Alta Alella. Time: 20:00 (concert at 22:00) Price: €18

4 July. Wine retailer Vinicia in Lleida (Humbert Torres, 19) has invited Pilar Salillas, winemaker at Celler La Gravera in Alfarràs, who will lead a tasting of biodynamic wines made under the Demeter certification in Costers del Segre. 4, 11, 18 y 25 July. Bodegas Franco-Españolas opens the doors of its cellars in Logroño to show four films in their original language with subtitles preceded by a gastrobar, a wine bar and tailor-made sessions with DJs. A two-ticket pack includes a bottle of wine and costs €16. Time: 19:30 The film will start and dusk.

5-7 July. Vilafranca del Penedès near Barcelona welcomes summer with the festival Banc Sabadell Vijazz Penedès, which blends in wine and cava with national and international jazz music. As well as listening to good music, the town’s Jaume I Square will be the place to go for the Wine & Cava Festival, with over 30 producers from DO Penedès and DO Cava offering around 300 wines paired with gourmet products such as ham, cheese, foie, anchovies and sweets.

5 July - 3 August. The town of Roses (Girona) and other locations nearby host the Sons del Món Festival with artists such as Texas, Rozalén, Boney M and The Original Wailers. During the concerts, wines from Empordà will be served and there will be two tastings before the gigs of artists Ramón Maribet and Luz Casal at Celler la Vinyeta and AV Bodeguers respectively. Additionally, Quimi Portet Roger Mas and Judit Neddermann will hold concerts at Celler Vinyes del Aspres, Cellers d’en Guilla and Martín Faixó. A glass of wine is included in the ticket. 5 July - 9 August. During the weekends of July and August, Festival VinyaSons includes a bunch of music concerts in a dozen wineries across Catalonia with artists such as Judit Neddermann, Marco Mezquida & Sol Picó, Paula Valls, Núria Graham or In Crescendo, combined with tastings and tours of the wineries. Participating wineries are: Can Bas, Calopa de Dalt, Adernats, Vilarnau, Mas Rodó, Clos Montblanc, Mas Vida Celler, Carol Vallés, Celler Parato, Mas Geli, La Vinyeta y Cellers Avgvsts Forvm.

6 July. Mas Figueres, a country hotel in Marçà (Tarragona) hosts the eighth edition of festival VIdeNIT with the presence of 20 producers from Priorat, Montsant, five local cooperatives and two guest wineries, one from Terra Alta and one from Empordà: Acústic Celler, Álvaro Palacios, Bodega Mas Alta, Clos de l’Obac, Clos Figueras, Celler Dosterras, Cellers ScalaDei, Celler Vermunver, Joan Simó, Casa Gran del Siurana, Cims de Porrera, Mas d’en Gil, Vinyes Compte, Alfredo Arribas, Josep Grau Viticultor, La Conreria d’Scala Dei, Capçanes, Vinyes Domènech, Orto Vins, Joan D’Anguera, Celler Masroig, Agrícola d’Ulldemolins, Celler cooperatiu de Cornudella, La Vinicola del Priorat, Vins del Tros from Terra Alta and Privat Perellada Chivite from Empordà. 7-8 July. Restaurant Tossal Gros at the Escoda Sanahuja wine estate hosts H20 Vegetal, a natural wine party with a bunch of sulphide-free wine producers from around the world who will show their wines. 7 and 28 July. Bodega Bentomiz in Sierra de Málaga, near Sayalonga, combines wine and music at their Mountain Wine & Music 2019 with a series of concerts at their cellar throughout the summer. 8 July. Wine retailer in Valladolid El Buen Gusto Vinos (Manuel Silvela, 2) hosts a tasting of 2018 en primeur samples from producers like Artadi, Descendientes de J. 9 July. Wine store Enoteca Barolo (Príncipe de Vergara, 211) in Madrid has invited Juancho Asenjo to conduct a tasting of Palo Cortado wines from the Sherry Triangle and Montilla-Moriles with the following wines: Palo Cortado Agostado Ramiro Ibáñez 2016, Palo Cortado Fernando de Castilla Antique, Palo Cortado Abuelo Diego Alvear, Palo Cortado Tradición, Palo Cortado Cardenal Valdespino and Amontillado Conde Aldama. 10 July. ICEX España Exports and Investments, in partnership with Spain’s Wine Market Watchdog (OeMv) and the Spanish Wine Federation (FEV), host a conference on the status of Spanish wines in international markets, as well as the entry barriers they face or the export subsidies they are eligible for. The US market will be the focus of this new edition, with the presence of US expert Jon Stamell, Chairman of the Advisory Board of Wines from Spain in the United States, who will lead a round table with long-standing wineries in the market. 11July. Mostrador de Vila Viniteca in Madrid General Díaz Porlier, 45) hosts a tasting of rosé champagnes made by Grandes Maisons, vignerons and small independent producers. 12 July. The Castle of Ponferrada hosts FED (Festival Estival Demencial) a meeting place for winemakers, trade professionals, critics and wine enthusiasts amid wine, talks, debates, gastronomy and live music. There are around 20 producers confirmed for the event such as Akilia, Bertrand Sourdais, Cantariña, César Márquez, Demencia de Autor, Luna Beberide, Raúl Pérez Viticultor or Vinos Valtuille, among others. 12 and 26 July. Restaurant La Lobita in Navaleno (Soria) has organized two paired suppers with the participation of the A la Volé team (12th) who will present a selection of champagnes and Recaredo (26th) with their sparkling wines. Information and bookings on the +34 975 374 368 

12-27 July. Like other years, La Taberna der Guerrrita in Sanlúcar de Barrameda hosts its summers tastings with some leading characters of the Spanish and international wine scene. July will be a chance to taste the wines of Comando Granada (12 July, 20:00), Alberto Orte from sherry producer Poniente (13 July, 12:30), Álvaro Girón (20 July, 12:30), Jaime Suárez Pardo from Dominio de Atauta (26 July, 20:00) and Willy Pérez (27 July, 12:30). 13 July. Six producers in DO Ribeiro (Catro Parroquias, Villanueva, Alberte, Antonio Montero, Eduardo Bravo y Viña Costeira) will have a stand a the fifth edition of festival Ribeiro Son de Viño in Barrosa beach in San Vicente do Mar. Artists in the show include Eladio y los Seres Queridos, Axolotes Mexicanos, R.E.A.L., Lois, Santi Araújo and Oh Ayatollah. Time: 13:00-05:00 Price: €11 (€ 15 at the box office)

18 July. Wine store Sorbo in Ponferrada (Ancha St, number 19) hosts a tasting focused on sensory analysis. In a relaxed and participative way, winemaker Lolo Yebra will give the clues to understand how the senses that are involved in tasting wine behave, how to recognize the senses used in tasting and how to identify flavours and sensations. 18 July. As part of its 25th anniversary celebrations, the restaurant La Vieja Bodega in Casalarreina (La Rioja) hosts a dinner paired with wines and a jazz concert with singer Lara Vizuete. Time: 20:30 Price: €50 Bookings on +34 941 324 254

18-21 July. Wine and food will be two key ingredients in the 17th Ribeira Sacra  Festival, with artists like Kevin Johansen, Los Enemigos, Jonathan Wilson or Delafé, among others. Concerts will be combined with catamaran trips on the river Sil, guided tours and tasting in wineries like Regina Viarum, Algueira or Abadía da Cova. Some events are free but the three-day pass costs €45.

19-21 July. We like rock festivals where wine can be enjoyed and that's why we include in our agenda the Ezcaray Fest, where festival-goers can enjoy the wines of Gómez Cruzado from Haro while they listen to music in this mountain village  in La Rioja. Navarra band Berri Txarrak are touring for the last time and will play alongside bands like Garbayo, Los Brazos, Los Deltonos, Tarque or Los Zigarros, among others. Time: 20.00 Price: €30

20 July. The third edition of Rioja Alavesa-Euskadi Around The Table will be held in Lapuebla de Labarca with the presence of 12 producers from various areas in the Basque Country. There will be tastings, stands with local and regional gourmet products for sale like cheese, chorizo and olive oil, music and children’s activities. To finish the day, a dinner will be served after an open air concert at dusk with singer Laura Rubio (€35).

24 July. Joan Rubió, from Cal Tiques, one of the leading producers to embrace biodynamic grape growing in Penedès and former winemaker at Recaredo, will be in Monvínic (Diputació, 249) presenting a bunch of wines from Penedès made by him and by other producers in the region. The wines are: Clos dels Guarans Penedés Tardatio 2017, Bodega Clandestina Penedés Blanc Sense Papers 2018, Esteve i Gibert Penedés Les Vistes 2014, Amós Bañeres Penedés Vinya Oculta 2017, Enric Solé Penedés Nun Vinya dels Taus 2017, Cal Tiques Penedés Tiques 2018, Cal Tiques Penedés Juanots 2018, Cal Tiques Penedés Ull de Llebre 2018, Clos Lentiscus Penedés Perill Noir 2011, Sicus Penedés Garrut 2017 and Celler Pardas Penedés Aspriu Negre 2011. 25 and 27 July. Rosa María del Castillo, sommelier at El Tros in Barcelona (Mallorca, 303) hosts a tasting of rosés from Priorat and Montsant with the following wines: La Matilde 2018, de Albert Costa (Vall Llach), Les Argiles d’Orto Rosat 2017 (Orto Vins), Acústic Rosat 2018 and Dido La solució rosa 2015 (Venus La Universal). 27 July. Bodegas Corral in Navarrete (La Rioja) presents the third edition of “Una parada en el Camino, Don Jacobo” to mark the day of Santiago. The winery, which is in the route of the French Way to Santiago de Compostela, celebrates the festivity with theatrical routes, tastings, activities for children with bouncy castles and handicrafts, games, music and live performances including Spanish band Revolver. Price: €20

28 July. Twelve producers in DO Ribeiro (Adega Deseu, Alanís, Catro Parroquias, Cuñas Davia, Divino Rei, Eduardo Bravo, Pazo Casanova, Priorato de Razamonde, Ramón do Casar, Terra do Castelo, Viña Carpazal and Viña Costeira) will be offering their wines at the Ribeiro Son de Viño festival in Pazo de Cea in Nigrán (Pontevedra). Bands like El Síndrome de Penny Lane, Blue Monk, Bafana Bafana, Nadie es Perfecto, Broken Beach and DJ Félix will also be playing their tunes. Time: 13:00-00:00 Price: €12 (€15 at the gates)
