As the days get longer, wine activities are on the rise, with established festivals such as Ribeiro Wine Fair, Fira del Vi de Falset or Villabuena Wine Fest and Samaniego in Wine in Rioja bringing opportunities to taste very diverse wines. The usual shops and restaurants, which organise wine tastings month after month, such as Vila Viniteca, La Caníbal o Lust for Wine, are also on our agenda. 3 May. Vinicia wine shop in Lleida (Humbert Torres, 19) presents a blind tasting of eight wines led by sommelier Gregori Albareda. Time: 21:00 Price: €60 More information and reservations at club@vinicia.es

3-5 May. The 61st edition of Ribeiro Wine Fair returns with more than 35 wineries and colleiteiros (small vignerons) and several activities in Alameda de Ribadavia (Ourense) such as a public blind tasting or the Obradoiro de Cocina, where sommeliers Alberto Ruffoni and Guillermo Miranda will pair dishes from Galician restaurants with Ribeiro wines. 3-5 May. Ressons Penedès by Cruïlla is a festival that fuses music, wine tourism and wine on a handful of stages, among them 10 wineries from L'Alt Penedès such as Can Rafols dels Caus (Gemma Humet), Oriol Rossell (Sergi Carbonnell), Caves Vilarnau (Azucarillo Kings) or Mont Rubí (Ferran Palau). 3-5 May. The Fira del Vi de Falset is back with a show at the village's exhibition centre featuring more than 50 wineries from Priorat and Montsant (€18) and a host of other worthwhile events. These are just some of them: Les Dones del Vi exhibition, by Natàlia Sanahuges (3rd, free); Vidart 2024: Exploring the Mesoclimates of Priorat (in English, Catalan or Spanish, 3rd, €40); a tasting of more than 40 white wines from Montsant and Priorat and other invited areas at the Absis del Castillo in Falset (3rd, €60), Cariñenas from Porrera (3rd, €60); Tast amb Dones (4th, €29), Tast de les Mines in Bellmunt del Priorat (4th, €50); wine tasting ‘Los Nombres de la Tierra’ (4th and 5th, €10), dinners paired with the wines of Sara Pérez & René Barbier and Mas Alta at El Celler de l'Aspic in Falset (4th and 5th), Tast amb Llops at the hotel Cal Llop (4th, €65), Tast de Cal Compte (5th, €78), Bacchanal dels Brisats in Falset (5th, €70), wines from Mallorca (4th, free) or a blind tasting with wines from Montsant (5th, €10). 4 May. The Viños Vivos team and friends organise in Pontevedra Cha Cha Cha - Viños Fest, a wine party with music and food by Palmkids House and a selection of wines by the glass and by the bottle from all the wineries represented by this Galician distributor. Where: Palmkids House, rúa do Laranxo, 35. Hours: 12:00 - 20:00

4 May. The village of Villabuena de Alava in Rioja Alavesa holds the third edition of Villabuena Wine Fest, a wine and gastronomy festival that brings together some of the town's wineries plus restaurant Kiko and Hotel Viura. There will be stands with wines from the 19 participating bodegas such as Bideona, Izadi, Luis Cañas, La Marquesa, Hnos Frías del Val, Berarte or Beltxuri, among others, 15 tastings and presentations wit producers, a gymkhana around the village, cooking workshops, children's storytelling and music. Hours: 11:00-21:00 Price: €25

4 May. Bosquecillo Street in Pamplona hosts Navarra Rosé Day with more than a dozen producers such as Inurrieta, Ochoa, Pago de Cirsus, Gran Feudo or Señorío de Sarría showing their wines in a leisurely day with pintxos, music and the popular pink hats.

4 May.javascript:nicTemp(); The 11th Mostra de Vins Terres dels Alforins returns to Fontanars des Alforins (Valencia) with a tasting and sale of wines from the 16 producers who form the association: Los Frailes, Belda, Celler del Roure, Los Pinos, Rafael Cambra, Arráez, La Viña, Dominios de MGP, Pago Casa Gran, Enguera, Sant Pere, Vinya Alforí, Clos de Lôm, Clos Cor Ví, La Comarcal and El Poblet. There will also be live music and food. Hours: 11:00 - 19:30 Price: €10

4 May.  As part of its wine tourism programme, Alta Alella winery near Barcelona presents an unusual workshop to describe and identify the songs of the birds that inhabit Alta Alella's vineyards. The activity is conducted by biologist and environmental consultant Pere Alzina and includes a walk through the Can Gens estate, a tasting of El Celler de les Aus wines made without added sulphites, grape must tasting for the little ones and an aperitif. Time: 10:30 Price: €15

4, 8, 12, 14 and 16 May. Lust for Wine in Burgos, directed by Pilar Cruces, presents its programme of wine events this month, starting on the 4th with a tour and tasting called "Proserpina and the arrival of spring, wines and vinyls" at Bodegas Dominio de Cair (11:30, Price and reservations on +34 947 54 52 76). On the 8th, Pilar leads the tasting ‘La vie en rose’ at Clarita restaurant in Madrid (Corredera Baja de San Pablo, 19, 21:00), to continue on the 12th with a session in Burgos (12:30-13:45, €35) of international wines to learn how to taste blind (Plaza Alonso Martínez, 7A Office 57). ‘Te leo un Vino’ in Música y Deportes at Paseo del Espolón, 16 in Burgos (19:30, €8) will be on the 14th while on the 16th and 23rd Pilar will conduct a session on Burgundy at Lust for Wine (20:30, €45) and La Pícara in Aranda de Duero (Sta María 2, 20:30 €35), respectively. 4 - 26 May. A group of 16 cava producers hold open-door days during weekends to celebrate the arrival of spring. Bolet, Covides, Giró Ribot, Carles Andreu, Kripta, Sumarroca, Vilarnau and Alta Alella, among others, welcome the public to a spring festival with activities ranging from vineyard walks to electric bike tours, tastings, food and wine pairings and family activities. Prices vary depending on the activity.

5 May. Clara Isamat's documentary La Contraetiqueta will be screened in the video room of Barberà de la Conca (Tarragona). In it, she gives voice to small wine producers who demand that the European law be applied correctly by the DOs to artisanal producers. The screening will be followed by a wine tasting with local bodegas from the group Vinyataires Lliures: Mas de la Sabatera, Celler Vilalta Pere, Succes Vinícola, Liu Celler, Taranna Po-ètic and Carlania Celler.

6-7 May. The Cuvée BottleShop in Barcelona (Aribau, 76) has invited producer Núria Renom, who will present Les Cantarelles, one of the most historic farmhouses in Penedès, and the wines she makes there. Time: 19:00 Price: €15. Reservations at botiga@cuvee3000.com The following day, at the Madrid shop (San Bartolomé, 8), Núria Aviñó from Clos Lentiscus will present the sparkling and still wines made at the family estate in El Garraf. 6, 9, 14, 16, 21, 23 and 30 May. This month, Vila Viniteca presents a host of activities in its shops in Barcelona and Madrid. In Barcelona, the calendar starts with a dinner with Juan Carlos and Celia Vizcarra at Taverna del Clínic ( 9th, €125) and continues at its premises in Agullers 7 with a vertical tasting of Vinyes Domènech Teixar (9th, €69), wines from high elevation vineyards (14th, €59), heroic viticulture in Ribeira Sacra (14th, €69), Rioja vs Ribera del Duero (21st, €99) and a tour of Catalan wines (30th, €65). In Madrid, the first event will also be a dinner with the Vizcarra family at Bodega de Los Secretos (6th, €125), to continue at the premises of Fernán González, 29 and General Díaz Porlier, 45, on 9th with the wines of Dominio del Águila (€99), followed by a tasting of Mersault (23rd, €125) and Côtes du Rhône (30th, €89). 6-31 May. In addition to the Fira del Vi in Falset, 15 wineries in Priorat and Montsant will be offering this month tours and tastings, paired meals at Celler de l'Aspic, cultural activities and a couple of special tastings: champagnes with Xavier Monclús and great whites of the world with Ferran Centelles, both at Aguiló Vinatería in Falset (Tarragona). 8 May. As part of the Añada Conocimiento training programme run by the Rioja Alavesa Wine Route, Mikel Garaizabal presents a seminar to understand, serve and taste Rioja Alavesa wines. Where: Bodegas Baigorri (Samaniego). Hours: 17:00 - 19:00 Price: € 20.66

9 and 22 May. Enoteca Barolo in Madrid (Príncipe de Vergara, 211) presents this month a tasting of South African wines with Juancho Asenjo as master of ceremonies. Time: 20:30 - 22:00 Price: €55.01 The price of this activity includes a €15 voucher that can be redeemed to purchase the wines of the tasting. On the 22nd, there will be a tasting of pink champagne (€65)

9 and 22 May. Madrid wine bar La Caníbal (Argumosa, 28) has invited José Crusat, owner of Adega Entre Os Ríos, who will present a tasting of the wines he makes from vineyards on granite and schist soils in the Barbanza area (A Coruña). On the 22nd, the guest is Julián Ruiz, a natural wine producer in his winery Esencia Rural. He will be at La Grifería (Antonio de Leyva, 2). Time: 19:00 Price: €25

10 May. Wine store Reyna de Copas in Olite (Pl. Carlos III El Noble) has invited Anabelle Borra, an American-Dutch woman who now makes biodynamic Garnachas at her project Vinos de Bellite in this village in Navarra. If you go there, you'll be able to taste four of her wines and her olive oil too. Time: 19:30 Price: €25

11 May. A new edition of Cuatrogatos Wine Fest is back, a fun-festive party where distributor Federico Ferrer brings together around 30 producers and 150 wines: Quinta Milú, Adega Entre Os Ríos, Primitivo Collantes, Cota45/De La Riva/Luis Pérez, Mayetería Sanluqueña, Barco del Corneta, Coto de Gomariz, César Príncipe, Celler del Roure, Mas Doix, Orulisa and Zarate, among others. This edition, like all previous editions, is open to anyone who likes wine, not just professionals, and will be held at Sala Milwaukee in El Puerto de Santa María. Time: 12:00 Price: €28

11 May. SomRosats is the first Rosé Wine Festival in Catalonia and includes a game to discover these wines, an aroma circuit, children's activities and of course tastings and a meal. It is held at Rendé Masdéu, a producer from DO Conca de Barberà in l'Espluga de Francolí (Tarragona) where 20 local producers from the area will be showing up to 40 wines. Time: 17:00 - 23:00 Prices from €20.

12 May. Finca Villacreces in Ribera del Duero hosts a brunch among the vines with wines from the winery and a variety of dishes, all of it tot he sounds of a  jazz band called De Perdidos Al Trío. There will also be an art exhibition by the Canva School of Arts and a visit to the winery. Time: 12:00 - 15:00 Price: €35  (€20 under six years old)

14 and 27 May. The Rioja Culture Centre in Logroño (Mercaderes, 9) presents this month a couple of tastings open to all wine lovers: Unravelling the Leza/Jubera Valley from the perspective of Bodegas Paco García (14th) and Wines from Viñedos Singulares with the Rioja Winemakers' Association (27th). Time: 18:00 - Price: €30 (members €20). Registration at info@sumilleresrioja.com

16, 23 and 27 de May. Union Española de Catadores in Madrid (Lope de Vega, 27) presents the following tastings this month: Victoria Frutos, winemaker at Bodegas Estévez, brings her wines from Jerez (16th, €30), a tour of the ageing and production of Lepanto brandy with Rocío Trillo, master distiller at González Byass (23rd, €40) and wines made in concrete presented by Dani Poveda (27th, €40) . Time: 19:00

17-26 May. The Binissalem appellation hosts Wine Days Mallorca across several towns and the presence of the wineries of the region. There will be tastings —the main one on 17th at Claustro de Sant Francesc with 10 producers from the DO, food, winery tours, cultural activities, electric bike rides through the vineyards, nordic walking and music. 18 May. The second edition of Vignerons Wine Festival organised by producer Nacho Álvarez brings together 11 winemakers from Bierzo (Demencia, Banzao, Cantariña, Godelola, Gancedo, Valle del Recunco and Pago de los Abuelos), DO León (Pincerna), DO Ribera del Duero and Vino Verde (Zarcillos de Ju), Ribeira Sacra (Abadía da Cava) and Valdeorras (O Cabalín). Where: A terraced vineyard in Avenida de Ourense, 21, Puente de Domingo Flórez (León).

18-19 May. The Rock & Wine Fair returns to Platja d’Aro (Plaça del Mil.lenari) in Catalonia's Costa Brava with the presence of over 30 producers from various wine regions in Spain and Argentina. Names like Borsao, Parès Balta, Marco Abella, Tomàs Cusiné, Martí Fabra, Cooperativa d’Espolla, La Vinyeta, Pago de Cirsus, Insensatos or Garate and food stands will be available. Visitors will be able to taste the wines to the sound of rock and roll in sensory tastings, and will also be able to buy all the wines on show. Time: 18:00 - 24:00 (Sat) 12:00 - 15:00 and 17:00 - 24:00 (Sun)

18 and 28 May. Artean Wines training centre in Bilbao presents a couple of interesting events this month at Espacio Pangea: on the 18th a workshop on sparkling wines and tasting of eight wines (09:30 to 14:30, € 135), while on the 28th, winemaker Jabier Marquínez presents a tasting of wines from recovered varieties from Navarra such as Oneca, Musa and Ambrosina among others (18:30 -20:30 Price: €45)

20 May. The Verema Experience returns to Madrid (Espacio Ventas, c/Alcalá, 182) with a show featuring around 30 exhibitors and commented tastings by Ramón Bilbao, the Regulatory Board of Campo de Borja, Bodegas Arzuaga and Ribera del Duero. Opening hours: 12:00-21:00 Price: €25 online (€35 on the door)

20 May. In Salamanca, the Winelovers wine bar (Íscar Peyra, 5) welcomes Francisco Barona, winemaker and viticulturist in Ribera del Duero with his own project after having worked in France, USA and South Africa. Time: 20:00 Price €50 (€35 for members). Registration at wineloversalamanca@gmail.com

21 and 22 May. Coalla presents a couple of tastings this month in Gijón and Oviedo with the wines of Escolinas, an interesting project focused on local varieties in Cangas de Narcea (Asturias). The wines to be tasted are Blanco de Cangas 2022, Castaño 2022, Blanco Roble 2021, Mezcla Canguesa 2022, Verdejo Negro 2022 and Carrasquín 2019. In Gijón the tasting will take place in Espacio Kausa, C/ Santa Doradía 5, while in Oviedo it will be in the Coalla shop in C/Asturias 14. In both tastings, snacks with products from the shop will be served. Time: 20:00 Price: €35.

22 May. Restaurant Muka in San Sebastián (Zurriola Hiribidea, 1) has invited Abel Mendoza, one of the most respected vignerons from San Vicente de la Sonsierra in Rioja, to present his wines, which will be paired with some bites prepared by Muka. Time: 18:30 - 20:00 Price: €30

23 and 29 May. Casa Beatnik hotel in Vedra, near Santiago de Compostela, presents a couple of tastings this month. The first, on the 23rd, will be presented by the inimitable biodynamic grower Pilar Higuero of Lagar de Sabariz, while on the 29th the guest is Gutier Seijo, of Mixtura Wines, who is recovering historic vineyards on both sides of the river Miño. 24 May. Virginia García, wine director at Saddle restaurant in Madrid (Amador de los Ríos, 6), leads a tasting of Galician wines, with a selection of wines from small local producers. Time: 18:00 Price: €80 Reservations by phone on +34 91 216 39 36

24-25 May. Vida Penedès, a group of young producers from this Catalan region, is holding an event entitled ‘Encaixar Mirades, Sostenir el Territori’ in the town of Santa Fe del Penedès, where they will discuss different aspects of how to take care of their territory and how to practice viticulture in times of extreme drought. Attendees will also be able to watch the film La Contraetiqueta by Clara Isamat, taste the wines of these young producers and those of guest wineries from Rioja (Martes of Wine), Navarra (San Martín de Unx) y Priorat (Gratallops), and enjoy lunches and dinners coordinated with local restaurants such as Cal Ticus, Mam bo and Cigró d'Ore, among others. There will also be children's activities and a night-time rumba and DJ concert. Tickets can be purchased on the day and online (the site to buy tickets and the full programme will be posted on their IG account @vida_penedes shortly).

27 May. The wines of Cebreros have a showroom in VinytÁvila, with the presence of eight producers of the DO: Daniel Ramos (El Tiemblo), Don Juan del Águila (El Barraco), El Callejón (San Esteban del Valle), Huellas del Tiétar (Lanzahíta), Nietos de Señora María (Navandrinal), Península (Cebreros), Rico Nuevo (Burgohondo) and Tierras de Cebreros (Cebreros). Place: Patio de la sala Muralla de Sofraga Palacio in Ávila. Time: 18:30 - 22:00 Price: €5. After VinytÁvila, on Sunday 2 June Garnacha lovers can have fun at Conectando Gredos, an event with 31 producers from all over Gredos. It will be in the Iruelas Valley and more details will follow in the June agenda.

30 May. Lavinia in Madrid (Moraleja Green) presents this month a tasting with the new vintages of Vega Sicilia: Macán Clásico 2020, Macán 2019, Pintia 2019, Alión 2020, Vega Sicilia Valbuena 2019 and Oremus Tokaji Dry Mandolás 2021. Time: 19:00 to 21:00 Price: €99.

30 May. Wine store El Buen Gusto Vinos in Valladolid (Manuel Silvela, 2) hosts a special event with Pedro Ruiz Aragoneses, director of Alma Carraovejas wine group, who will present some of the projects his group is involved in, including some vertical tastings: Emilio Rojo (10:30), Aiurri (12:30) and Pago de Carraovejas (17:30). There will also be tables to taste the various wines of the group as well as some of the cuvées that Alma Carraovejas distributes through SV Wines. Where: Hotel Zenit El Coloquio (Pza. Universidad). 31 May. The gardens of Hotel Palacio de Samaniego in Rioja Alavesa will host the third edition of Samaniego in Wine, where eight local producers - Alútiz, Amaren, Baigorri, Bello Berganzo, Heredad de Aduna, Ostatu, Pascual Larrieta and Remírez de Ganuza - will present their wines accompanied by tastings prepared by Bruno Coelho, chef of the Tierra y Vino restaurant, and live music. Time: 18:00 - 20:00 Price: €80 (includes 8 glasses of wine + food pairing)
